SAOimage

SAOimage is an interactive freeware UNIX program, based on the X Window System, that displays color or halftone astronomical images. SAOimage is intended mainly for use with FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) images.

SAOimage performs a number of image manipulation functions, including interactive cotnrast/brightness manipulation, image panning and zooming, scaling, and pseudo-color display of images. In standalone mode, you can use SAOimage to display FITS files directly. SAOimage can also be used as a display server for the IRAF (Image Reduction and Analysis Facility) package or any other client software using the IIS protocol for remote I/O. This package is available as both source and executables.

SAOimage is in the directory /software/unix/saoimage on the CD-ROM. SAOimage was originally developed by Mike VanHilst at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and is now maintained by Douglas J. Mink, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and the IRAF project, National Optical Astronomy Observatories.
